One of my houseplants has begun to flower. Cooler nighttime temperatures and shorter daylight hours with very little artificial lighting provides the perfect environment for setting buds. These lovely tropical cacti are native to southeast Brazil, and similar to many orchids, are epiphytes, tree dwelling plants.

Our friend, the ever-entertaining Crow, was very interested in what was in the water, so much so that he was willing to get his feet and beak quite wet.
In the same vicinity, a Ring-billed Gull idly took a stroll, no doubt looking for a morsel somewhere.
Also nearby, an oh so busy Merganser cruised back and forth in this narrow strip of water by the shore and frequently dipped below the surface.
Later, as I walked on the nature trail, I spied through some branches six Mallard Ducks in the middle of the river.

I brought the two potted geraniums inside on Thursday night as the forecast was calling for freezing temperatures. It was a chilly -4C on Friday morning. Saturday morning was colder still (-9C). Today we woke up to a balmy -10C!! Remarkably, there is no snow. It's supposed to be a sunny day, and I can see the sun streaming through the window now.
