Shasta Daisies

I have several Shasta Daisy plants. They are prolific
self seeders, and add such cheer to the garden in
late summer.

Monarda* (Bee Balm, OswegoTea)

The Bee Balm begins to bloom in my garden
at the end of July.
I look forward to seeing it every year.

The genus Monarda was named for Nicolas Monardes (1500?-1588), a Spanish physician and botanist.

Gaillardia

I have chosen to present the colorful Gaillardia, a perennial from the sunflower family. It grows in my garden from a package of seeds I scattered several years ago. Every day the bees come to forage for nectar and pollen. Some of the petals have fallen away from the bristly flower heads, but they still look very lovely. I hope you will enjoy these pictures.

Fireweed

Epilobium augustifolium

Floral emblem of the Yukon Territory (NW Canada)

The dark honey produced from fireweed
is of superior quality, and if possible, many
beekeepers like to place their apiaries near
these flowers. Native people would split young stalks
of this plant and scoop out the sweet pith,
and the French Voyageurs called it l'herbe fret,
taking it with them to use as greens.
